Altered-decoupaged dinner tray

Article By Alice

Transforming trays makes good use of vintage magazines and mod podge, which I'm rich in right now.

This is the second decoupaged item I’ve added to my home, a little reminder that practical can be pretty.

Things you'll need to get started

Things you will need

Vintage papers, magazine cuttings

Modge podge

A brush

Acrylic paint

Some vintage material or any scrap material

Staple gun

For the material covering:

1. Choose material, wide enough to cover the padded bottom of your tray, I chose a red and white material cut from a vintage dress.

2. Fold the material over to make a hem each side and staple gun it to the underside rim of the tray. This is a little fiddley, and scissors are useful to have nearby to cut to better size and shape.

Note: Staple it close to the rim edge as possible, so no surface underneath is showing.

New material covering

To decorate and decoupage the tray:

1. Cut images from newspapers and magazines and layout on the tray in an order you like. These clippings are coming off, so take a quick photo to remind yourself of the order later.

2. Paint the edges of the tray frame, I chose white as it matched the material I used.

3. When paint is dry, choose the first picture and spread a light layer of Modge Podge evenly on the back.

Step3 and 4

4. Press the picture onto the free surface and smooth down with fingers till flat. Ensure the Modge Podge has spread to the sides of the picture if placed by the edge of the frame, to prevent creasing.

5. Repeat steps three and four till the tray is covered in pictures.

6. When pictures are affixed, use a brush to spread Modge Podge lightly all over the pictures. It may look a little like glue has just been smeared everywhere but it’ll dry clear.

Step 6

Note: Decoupage spray is another option in finishing, it may be more effective.

7. Wait till tray is dry (around 15 minutes) and your done!

Altered découpage!
