Altered playing cards for journal prompts

Article By Alice

I wanted a set of journal prompts, to do more experimenting, stretching and to open myself up a little more. So I don't have mad dash to my computer each time, I've prepared them in one place, altering playing cards.

To make a set of journal prompts, first start by collecting prompts from blogs and write them down on paper. I found a huge selection on Daisy Yellow.

I tried to be as open as possible when choosing, so I get a few that I really want to try and some that I've never thought about trying or even get me out of my comfort zone completely.

I also added techniques and reminders to buy new materials such as; try three different mediums and buy glaze. I found great motivation to do more painted backgrounds that can be written and drawn on after from Traci Bunkers.

How to make journal prompt playing cards

1.Firstly find some playing cards that can be altered and stack them on top of each other.
2.Use an awl to make a hole in one corner that goes through all the cards. Insert a pin in the hole through the cards, this will make them moveable. To move onto the next steps, take the pin out, it will be your guide a little bit later.
3.Place the cards on the table, right side up and use white gesso as a base, then add white acrylic paint after, till none of the card is showing.
4.When dry, decorate the white cards just as you would an Artist Trading Card, with paint, crayons, clippings and words.
5.Turn the cards playing side up and cut and stick prompts written onto the playing card. Outline the paper prompts with crayons.
6. Stack the cards, showing the decorated side up and put the pin back through the hole made previously. Keep the cards and carry on journaling!
