Jolly June!

Article By Alice

This month has been so much fun, I’ve been smiling a lot and really enjoying myself- I can’t stop myself posing in pictures now- ridiculous! I’ve been crafting as I realized important dates were coming up and I had no money to spend on gifts, anniversaries, fathers day that type of thing. Read on to find out if we made it through the streets of London to the finish line…..

A few weeks ago I spotted a little boxed ad in the Metro, on it in bold letters was WALK FOR LIFE and under it was ‘join us to walk to support people affected by Hiv and Aids- Register FREE’. So I ripped it out, took it home and thought about it for a few minutes before i signed up and got people to join me too! You see I love walking, I don’t drive I just like to walk everywhere and another thing I thought was ‘I want to make a tutu so its the perfect thing to do, there will be loads of people dressed up’! So thats exactly what I did and heres how the finished product turned out:

Equipment you will need for a new sew tutu:

Half a meter of ribbon- the thicker the better!
6 meters of tulle- the more the puffier the tutu can be.
Scissors
A ruler
A tape measure

Instructions

Measure round the waist of the person who will wear the tutu and tie a not either side at the hips or in front, with enough room to be able to tie a bow.
Take a meter of tulle and fold in half once.
Lay flat on floor or hard surface and roll it up (like a sausage).
Once rolled, cut a little of each end, to make it tidier.
From the end of the roll measure 4 inches, do this until all material has been used.
Pick out the first roll, unravel it and fold in half.
Then cut at the top so you now have two strands of tulle.
Lay down ribbon and hold strand of tulle at the bottom, so their is a clear loop at the top.
Hold tulle over ribbon and thread ends of tulle through the loop catching the ribbon.
Tighten knot and slide to the end of the knot in ribbon 1.
Repeat this until all tulle is used and ribbon is covered in tulle strands.
Try it on!

I hope that helps! Once you get started its hard not to stop! The most annoying thing is if you ordered a lot of material like me, I had to do a lot of cutting into 1 meter squares before I even got to step one! But it was all going smoothly after that, make sure you do tighten up each knot as the more material that can be fitted onto the ribbon.

About the walk

We set off at midday from Potters Field Park, London; the four of us (two in cute and cool tutus) with 2,300 other walkers. The event, Walk For Life was run by Crusaid, a charity who support and benefit people in poverty and affected by HIV and AIDS. Everyone was walking for different reasons; I didn’t really have a proper reason apart from I like raising money for charity in a fun way and wanted to see some London sites too! The walk was 10 km (6 miles) and in total it took us about 3 hours. While we were waiting to be called to the start line we took photos with others that had dressed up, my favorite had to be the ‘flip flop men’ - check my photos, such a funny idea! The reason it took us so long to finish, was that we were taking in all the super sights and photographing everything! We walked past Tower Bridge, along Cannon Street for a pack of cookies, through Covent Garden past the crowds of bargain shoppers, by the Strand Theatre near to the millennium eye. Then all the way across the River Thames, waking past the Tate, Shakespear’s Globe and back to the start for a medal, some free goodies and live music, then we all went to eat at All Bar One- Mexican style!

It was a great day, thank you so much Anjuli and Ryan for joining in the fun, making it fab day!

My first Mini Munny!

Has anyone every heard of a Mini Munny? Well I hadn’t when I was kindly given one, so heres the info. A Munny, looks a bit like a cartoon character and sits sweetly in your hand, the body parts twist off for ease of decorating. The coolist thing about the character is that you can create something amazing and see how great you are! There are no limits either, its a yes to paint; material, paper, piercing, glue, glitter- anything you can find! Make sure you have Sharpie pens in your supplies too.

I had so much fun with mine, the head especially- I got a creative block after that for 3 days, you wouldn’t have wanted to speak to me then- mind on my Munny! The face is drawn with a green permeant pen that came in the box, on the cheeks i sprinkled some glitter and the lips have real lipstick smudged on too. The ears have sequin shapes on, I wanted to pierce them and make dangly earrings but when it comes to crafts I like to move quickly- too impatient! The hair puzzles people to how I came about thinking it up but its the first thing I thought of! Tea granules! I love using natural resources. The body is made from magazine cuttings and the skirt is a mini tutu. Finally, the wand. A last minute idea that turned out pretty good, I wanted to match it with a few purple sequins in the hair, so picked out an old Cadbury easter egg covering (ahh thats why I saved it….) and carefully put it on!

My Munny is now on my ornament shelf and the funny thing is that when I was doing it I had the strangest thought; if something bad was to happen, money worries, a break up or even a death, just something that would make me feel as if I couldn’t do arts and craft for a long while. Then keeping this one object that is totally made by me, will remind me that I should never give up what I’m passionate about.

Anniversary Gifts

When it came round to our two year anniversary, 14th June; I so badly wanted to spoil Mr.C and have the same in return. But when I had a good think about it, I knew we just didn’t have the money. So I found myself asking the most boring question ‘Could you get me a box of chocolates, like Milk Tray?’ Er WHAT!  Was that really just me talking? I didn’t want chocolates- so I set a challenge!

The theme for our anniversary challenge was- homemade! Nothing to tiring and complicated and it had to be made before midnight the same day.

So we each went into different rooms and got crafting! I chose to do a picture backed onto cardboard, half of it was a drawing of me and Mr.C at the beach based on cool collage artist Claudine Helmuth. The other part was my own idea, were both really into travel so I made a treasure map- tea stains and everything! So there was the name of countries we want to visit along with a little picture. At the bottom I wrote:
Follow your heart
Feed your passion
Feel the love now & always
xxxxxxx

At the end of the night we showed each other our gifts, all very exiting! Mr.C made me a little dog with googly eyes, he designed the shape and sowed it all from just one square of furry shawl! We were both very happy! I think every year there should be a theme….cheese models next year?......

Fathers Day

For Fathers Day, I would usually just buy my dear dad some dark chocolate and make a card, but I was so bored. So bored, I’d had a bad week too so I needed something to do something else- or I would go crazy! So I set another challenge, this time with two people that knew a little about Art from school but weren’t too happy about the annoying repetitive phone calls from me telling them ‘We are going to get together and make some ART’. Thank you bros, for
going through with it and putting up with the hassle! It was worth it! We decorated a big piece of card (£1.50 from Ryman) and each did a little bit of work to it. I did the face (its supposed to be dad…and I think it comes kinda close), I also did the collage of random pictures with the words ‘LIFE IS GOOD’ by them. John, who’s in the picture, painted the little stick man and colored the background yellow and Alexi did the red car at the bottom. We also dribbled and splashed paint onto the yellow, which I love doing!

Mr.C has a birthday

Near the end of June was Mr.C’s birthday, he was 24! And I wanted to make sure there was lots of fun things going on, so lots to do.

One night Mr.C suggested I make a t shirt for him, hmmm my first request…. Although I didn’t really want to make a t shirt, I decorated one instead. I bought a plain white t shirt (Peacocks £3) and got out many brightly colored fabric pens. I then drew a random design, an alien drinking beer- I just do not know where my inspiration comes from sometimes! And when I was finally done drawing it all on I just knew it didn’t look as I wanted and was certainly not fit for a straight man- way to much color! So I started again, this time on a black t shirt and got out gold and white paints from my box and painted a bigger alien drinking beer with a few circles behind him. I also put by the side of him ‘Celebrate Everyday’ which has two meanings; the first being that you should celebrate the good times with quite obviously, a beer. The other is that you should celebrate life itself, as it is great!

Another home made thing I did was birthday cake! Mmmm yummy! One night I went round my mums to use the cookery book, ingredients and a much better oven and made a cake with a picture of Mr.C on it. Ha! I thought it was really cool! Unfortunately the week it was going to get eaten was the hottest week so far this year, a heat wave! And the last thing we felt like was cake!! So only a tiny bit was tried, it was nice though.

Ok so onto the celebrations!.... The whole weekend was jammed packed, even from Friday night! On the Friday, I invited Mr.C’s friends over and we stayed in, watched a the Glastonbury festival on TV, this was the first time I had properly seen the singer Little Boots- she has such great songs! We all did a lot of eating and drinking and was just a lovely catch up and fun night in with friends!

We set off Saturday morning for London, drinking had got the better of us though and we didn’t get a super early train but arrived around lunch time instead. It was nice and hot for a change so I wore a long t shirt with ‘Life’s too short’ on it (a good message I think!) and my dark shades- I felt cool! We hopped on and off the train all day, the Jubilee line was down so it made it even more confusing! We went to a lot of places and there is pictures at the bottom of the page to show you.

My most favorite places were Piccadilly, for the shopping, Urban outfitters were having a sale and I got a hat from £40 down to £4 bargain, love it. We also went to Pasaje de Terror, where we watched a mini 3d scary movie to get us hyped up for the terrifying long dark maze where actors were out to scare us at every corner! It was a blast, it doesn’t look like much when you see it but, its truly electrifying!
Some where along our crazy train travels, Trafalgar Square I think, we went to the National Portrait Gallery, a free exhibition of people’s artist portraits and photography. Its worth a visit if you like the arts.

As the evening was drawing near, the clouds got darker and rain was upon us. We walked through Covent Garden to find some where to eat, after a long long walk in the rain we found Zizi, and just had enough time to bag it up as a take away before we went to see the mighty Derren Brown, a well known creator of illusion and a mentalist too. The show, suitably named Enigma, was interesting and fascinating, leaving you wanting to tell some body the spoilers to his tricks…but I can’t do that..sorry…you will just have to watch it!

The day after London, we went to Thorpe Park with family, I had great fun screaming on the rides with Neal and my bros- John is the funniest person to go on a roller coaster with! The new Saw ride videos you while your on the ride, hilarious also!
